Piemonte Region Of all Italian regions, Piemonte's foods and wine have the most to offer. The really great Italian reds- Barolo, Barbaresco, Nebbiolo and Barbera all come from the area. Alba is famous for the precious white truffle, known as "the diamond of the kitchen". It's a unique area, which remains relatively undiscovered, despite the rich history and culture of the region, its wealth and fertile agriculture. The countryside is very varied: passing from the rugged peaks of of the Alps to the north, to the damp rice paddies of Vercelli and Novara to the east, to the southern vine covered hillsides of the Langhe and of Montferrat. There are 56 different national or regional parks in the region. Piedmont was an initial springboard for Italy's unification in 1859-1861.The House of Savoy became Kings of Italy, and Turin briefly became the capital of Italy, before it was moved to and Florence, and then finally to Rome. Asti is the capital of Italian sparking white wine "spumante"and each year holds its own 'Palio' The 'Slow Food' movement which seeks to preserve traditional and regional cuisine was born in the region. In 2004, Slow Food opened a University of Gastronomic Sciences at Pollenzo. Piemonte proudly hosts the world's largest food and wine fair, the Salone del Gusto in Turin, a biennial cheese fair in Bra called Cheese, the Genoan fish festival called SlowFish, and Turin's Terra Madre ("Mother Earth") world meeting of food communities. You will soon realise that a visit to the area really is a gastronome's delight. An unforgettable experience while travelling in this part of Piemonte, is a visit to the spectacular historic cellars of Canelli, located 5km from Vigna Dell'Acqua. Twenty kilometers of tunnels dug in the rock at more than 30 meters below ground, the vaulted ceilings and red bricks are made even more spectacular by the soft lighting suitable for the rest of the wine. Wine has been made here since Roman times and because of the unique and perfect climate provided below ground here, grapes from surrounding vineyards are harvested and brought to Canelli for pressing and fermentation. The internal temperature remains virtually constant at between 12˚C and 14˚C all year round, ideal for ageing and helping to develop the distinctive character and flavour of the wines. The project application for recognition by UNESCO of the cellars of Canelli - underground cathedrals - as a world heritage site. During certain periods, the cellars are open to visitors. Wine Tasting. Arugably Italian’s best wine region Did you know that Piemonte had more DOCG’s (15 as of 2010) and DOC ( 45 and rising) than any other Italian region? The prize-winning wines, such as Barbera, Barolo, Barbaresco, Dolcetto, Nebbiolo, Grignolino, Malvasia and Asti Spumante among others are all produced in the region. Piemonte is made up of a large number of small scale family wineries, who focus on quality. We have had the pleasure of getting to know some of these local producers, and are happy to arrange tasting of their wines, either on local premises or by organising a special visit and tasting at the vineyard. We do this on request, and once we have an idea of what you would like to learn, or taste while you are here. Novice or connoisseur, we are only too happy to assist you as you discover the wonderful, noble wines of this region The Regions wines: The main grape grown here is the distinguished Nebbiolo, behind 4 of Piemonte’s DOCG : Barolo, Barbaresco, Roero and Gattinara. Its name derives from the word nebbia, or fog, because of a velvety, whitish coating over its berries in addition to the fact that it grows in an area where, at ripening time in September, heavy morning fog is a given and the humidity that it provides gives the grapes an ideal habitat. The production of strong reds is predominant in this landlocked, mountainous region and are the perfect complement to the rich and hearty cuisine featuring white truffles, fonduta, which is a variation of the Swiss cheese fondue, rice, meats, pastas and stuffed vegetables. That said though, among the whites the Asti Spumante achieved national fame thanks to Carlo Gancia, who learned the Champagne method in Rheims, France, and applied his newly acquired knowledge experimenting with Moscato grapes. Gancia’s headquarters are just 5km from Vigna dell’acqua, and our small vineyards produces moscato grapes. Another Piedmont creation that achieved worldwide fame is the Vermouth, which was first created by Benedetto Carpano in his wine shop near the Turin Stock Exchange. The classic American martini cocktail takes its name from the most known Italian producer of dry vermouth, Martini & Rossi.

Mr Rekers
